On 18th December members of the Fishing Committee will vote on the reform of Europe’s Fisheries Policy.
A key part of this policy is the support for Europe’s distant water fleet.
Whilst they are not a large element of Europe’s fleet, they make up a lot of its size in tonnage terms. They also fish in third country waters, usually under agreements the EU has negotiated for them, and paid for at taxpayers expense.
A Failed Fascit Economic Expirement ?
As any fishermen from Portugal or Spain will tell you this massive distant water fleet was to a large extent built up by their 1930s dictators Salazar and Franco , a fact confirmed to me a bright young man from Portugal a few days ago, whose dad and family were cod fishermen from Portugal.
