A lot is written about public affairs. I have come to the profession late in life. I have spent most of my life working for politicians and NGOs. Why is it that some interests win and others don’t?

I have simplified things down to:
1.Speak up an defend (promote) yourself in a timely fashion
2.Speak to the people who are making the decisions or the people who influence the people making the decisions
3.Make sure what you say makes sense to people without a PhD in the area
4. Useful to show that what you are doing is for the common good
5. Be a decent, civil, pleasant person.

Now doing this won’t give you any guarantees. It will though put you in a far better place than most interests trying to influence things.
