New MEPS
There are some well known newly elected MEPs who have chosen to become full members of the Fisheries Committees.
Some very experienced politicians have thrown there their lot in here. Miguel Cañete is tipped to be the next Spanish Commissioner. He’s a former MEP and before returning to Brussels he was Agriculture Minister in Spain. Richard Corbett is a former 2 term MEP and close adviser to Council President Herman Van Rompuy .
The Returning MEPs
Some of the leading voices for reform have been re-elected. Ulrike Rodust, who steered the CFP Basic Regulation through, has been returned, along with Isabella Lovin.
But, the leading opponents of reform have returned in force. Werner Kuhn and Alain Cadec (whose now Chair) who sought to strip the reform of most of its key elements are voices who are likely to seek to strip the CFP of the elements they fought against.
Substitues
It is interesting to see David McAllister, a high achieving German politician, join the Fisheries Committee.
Not Returning
Some of the most experienced fisheries MEPs in the retiring Struan Stevenson and Carmen Fraga will leave a large gap of knowledge in the new Committee. Chris Davies , Pat the Cope Gallagher, and Kriton Arsensis, who worked to steer the reform onto the books will not return.
