Knowing where to put the chalk mark

I was sent this post today. It is worth reading.

The real value of a lobbyist – Knowing where to put the chalk mark

For me, the real value of a lobbyist comes down to knowing the following:

  1. Knowing the right time to intervene.
  2. . Knowing the right person/people to engage with.
  3. Knowing the right information, evidence, and solution, to bring to their attention.
  4. Knowing the right words/values to use.
  5. Knowing the right procedure.

And, 6,  then checking it gets done right.

If you don’t know 1,2,3,4, and 5, your chances of getting what you want are next to zero. It matters not how many hours of work you put it, you are unlikely to win.

I’ve noticed over time, that most of the policy/political changes I’ve worked on have down to knowing 1 to 5, and then getting this to the right person’s attention.

This often takes just a few hours.
